Home Greening Instills Sense of Pride, Community in Cobbs Creek Neighborhood

Last week, the GreenTreks team was on hand at the Cobbs Creek Environmental Education Center for the first screening of our latest video, Green Homes. It was a special treat to reconnect with participants in the Darby Cobbs Watershed Partnership/Philadelphia Water Department supported project almost a year after we initially filmed.

True to the stormwater management theme, the weather was wet and dreary, but attendees spirits were not to be dampened. They loved the film — and to a person, they agreed that they’d participate in the project again if given the chance. In fact, when asked if they’d be so enthusiastic if asked to share in project costs (they were fortunate enough to be the pilot community, so the project was fully funded), the answer was a resounding YES!

Here’s the video that will have others scrambling to bring the Green Homes initiative to their own neighborhoods:

Now on Planet Forward: Capturing Rainwater is Good Business Practise

To start a new partnership with Planet Forward — a project of the Center for Innovative Media at The George Washington University that aims to share innovative ideas, informed opinion, and first-hand experience on energy, climate, and sustainability — we’re debuting some of our latest videos on sustainable stormwater management.

Check out their site at planetforward.org — and submit your ideas for their SMART COMMUNITIES initiative: What innovation can help communities build for the future and adapt to a changing planet?

While you’re there, be sure to look for our stories on various efforts underway in Pennsylvania to manage rainwater in ways that improve the local environment, add to our quality of life, and make good business sense. Go directly to their Water section >>

And check back often. They have some great stuff — and much more will be coming from us!

Be Moved to Action: Stories that Change the World on DVD just in time for the Holidays

We’ve got our online Shop up and running just in time for the Holiday season, so you can now watch entire programs on your big screen television or give them as gifts to family and friends!

If you haven’t been following us for several years, you may not even know about some of the great programs we’ve put out! The fact is, we’ve been so focused on building our EcoExpress portal and helping bring municipalities and engineers up to speed on the state of stormwater management that we haven’t been promoting award-winning programs like Farming on the Edge and From the Bay to PA; beautiful documentaries such as Life on the Delaware and Raycing the Sun; and quirky thought-provokers such as Environmental Classroom and Enviro-Art. Many of the programs from our GreenWorks series continue to air on cable and public television stations in various parts of the country, but you can own them now on DVD.

We’ll be highlighting one of the programs right here, every week, but you can check ‘em out now (literally–Purchase ‘em and Check ‘em Out!) with a safe secure purchase, right from our shop. Go Stock up >>

Water, Energy, Food, Children’s Health, Fair Trade…

Here at GreenTreks, we’re constantly reviewing our library of award-winning programming for footage and soundbites for new projects, and for segments that can get kids excited about the environment for incorporation into EcoExpress.  What we haven’t been great at doing is retooling our stuff for our dedicated web users, let alone for those who are interested in high quality DVDs for use in classrooms, Boardrooms, or home…

We’re a small staff who are flat out busy, but we can promise you, making the best of our programs more readily available is making its way to the top of our “Gotta Do” list.

As a starting point, check out our new Video Library and see what’s AVAILABLE NOW >>

Community Partners Offer Hands-on Enviro Ed to Kids

If you’re interested in engaging the Next Generation in caring for the environment, you should really check out EcoExpress. This Multimedia Hub of Learning was developed to support teachers in their efforts to teach to new curriculum standards, but it’s a great place for anyone to find what they need to start a conversation with kids.

EcoExpress is full of bit-sized video segments about all things environmental, and they’ve been shot locally. The locations are recognizable and they involve STORIES about people taking action. They’re not only inspiring, they’re done is a way that makes it easy for kids to relate.

Even better, we’re collaborating with an amazing group of Community Partners–such the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, iPraxis, and others–to bring hands-on Service Learning Project opportunities to kids.
