In an effort to promote hands-on learning and foster respect for the environment, GreenTreks and its partners are spending this 40th Anniversary Earth Day helping kids appreciate the connection between healthy soil, plants, and the food we eat every day.

The 5th grade students from J. Hampton Moore Elementary in Northeast Philly, Weaver’s Way, employees from the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Philadelphia office, and staff from GreenTreks’ EcoExpress program will be getting dirt under their fingernails on Earth Day while building and planting a Science Learning Garden. Over 120 children will take part in planting a Science Garden on the grounds of their school. Besides getting their hands dirty — what child doesn’t love that? — students will learn about the living ecosystem that exists within soil, explore worm composting, and gain a better appreciation for the real world value of the environment and ecology lessons they are taking in class.
